So… I’ve been nominated for a Liebster award by the formidable blogging duo Cesca & Ste – I found out that this is a blogging award given out to bloggers by bloggers that are new or have less than 200 followers. The aim is to encourage other bloggers to keep on blogging – I guess it’s like virtual encouragement and it works because it’s nice to know that people a) actually know your blog exists! b) people potentially read it from time to time and c) have taken the time out of their day to encourage you to keep writing.
Before I answer the questions that Cesca and Ste posted, I’d really like to thank them for nominating me, it probably sounds a bit lame, but if I’d have seen this first, I’d definitely have nominated their blog because it’s actually one of my favourite blogs to read – I’d highly recommend it for anyone that is into travel blogs.
So here are my answers to the 11 questions that I was asked, at the bottom of the page you’ll find out my nominations for a Liebster Award and the 11 questioned that I have asked them.
1) Why do you write your blog?
Well I guess I started writing my blog because I had to for uni, but I carried on sporadically because I really enjoy writing, and relating to people through writing, I just worry that what I say is of no relevance / use to people. I have also become totally obsessed with travel blogs over the last 12 months which has kind of inspired me to write more. I’d love to be the helpful person that is sharing my stories and experiences, even if only a handful of people read them.
2) What is your most over used phrase?
‘Like’. I say it WAY too much, and as soon as I know I’m doing it I can’t stop myself! It’s so unprofessional when I’m trying really hard (pretending) to be a professional!
3) How do you feel about the town you grew up in?
I feel like Nottingham is vibrant. It definitely has character and has a lot to offer people. I think it’s like any place that you grow up though, you can tire of it and appreciate it more when visiting instead of living there.
4) What is your favourite meal to cook and why?
This is tough but I’d probably say chili because it reminds me of my dad (he taught me to make a mean chili) and cottage pie because my mum taught me this 🙂
5) If you could hack anybodies phone, whose would it be and why?
If I could hack any phone, it would be my phone that got stolen last year… I’d love to know who was using it now & freak them out by posting random photos on to their stream. This answer may sound really weird but I just read this on Twitter.
6) Who was your childhood best friend and where did it all go wrong?
So many disasters… One example… There was a girl at school, we were best best friends, but it occurred to me that we only ever talked about TV and her family and stuff when I asked her questions, so one day I decided not to say anything to see if she’d y’know.. start the conversation and WE NEVER TALKED AGAIN. EVER.
7) If you could move your life, friends and family included, to another location, where would it be?
Australia because I can’t deal with the cold (Cesca & Ste – you’re lucky you don’t have to worry about perishing this winter.. It’s a very real concern that I deal with on a daily basis). I also think my family would have a much better quality of life in Australia, and I think there comes a point in life when you know it might not ever really happen for some people but you’d love for them to see those places.
8) If you could own any work of art in the world, without the chance of selling it, what would it be?
Oh, I saw this film at Christmas called ‘Big Eyes’ and it was about this artist called Margaret Keane in the 1960’s. Spoiler alert: In short – Her husband convinces her to keep painting but pretend that he is the artist (the story is way better than this). I’d love to own one of these really early paintings because the children with the big eyes looks so sad and my mother is always telling me how the eyes are the window to the soul and I think she might be right.
9) What traits do you think you’ve inherited from your parents?
I think a great quote that comes to mind is ‘we’re all mad here’. However, there are some other traits that I’m pretty sure are inherited… We’re all stubborn. A bit awkward at times, inappropriate sense of humour, eclectic music taste. Avid readers. Short temper when driving appears to be ‘a thing’.
10) When you were 10 years old what job did you say you’d do when you grew up?
11) Have you ever shockingly mistreated a pet? Don’t lie.
My hamster ran away once. I don’t think it was abuse that caused Whiskers to flee, I think she got scared when I tripped outside while wearing my roller skates… That’s right kids. Don’t play with your hamster outside while wearing little mermaid roller skates that you can’t even skate in. FYI: To the neighbour who ALWAYS made this joke, when a 10 year old girl is devastated that her best friend, whiskers, just ran away, don’t ask her if her hamster ‘just popped to the shops?’ and then laugh… Just no.
These are the blogs that I am nominating for a Liebster Award because I really enjoy the writing style of these guys and I enjoy reading about the topics they discuss. I would however, like to point out something that I realised because of this nomination – it came to my attention that actually, when you’re a new blogger, it’s really hard to find new small blogs, because, as a new small blog, it’s really hard to reach new people that actually connect with what you’re writing about. I realised that I follow a lot of blogs that are already popular and have gained a lot of popularity across various social media platforms – I’m not sure if this is because it’s become a full time thing rather than a hobby or if it’s the kind of thing where once you gain attention it’s easier to keep gaining attention, it’s just a case of breaking out there in the first place – if this makes sense.
Anyway, I’d really like to support smaller blogs that are new or just don’t have a great deal of followers but write about really interesting topics, or write in a particular way. Whatever it is about that blog that you love, I’d love to hear about it. So, if you have any recommendations for any blogs that I should check out / if you write a blog that’s totally awesome, please leave a comment with a link to the blog 🙂
In no particular order, I’d like to nominate these guys:
Another Aussie Abroad
My African Adventure
These are the questions I’m asking you guys:
1. What has been your favourite travel experience so far?
2. What has been the biggest learning curve while being away?
3. What are you most looking forward to in 2015?
4. Where were you exactly one year ago today? (Geographically)
5. With reference to the question above – What were you doing exactly one year ago today?
6. What is your biggest travel regret?
7. Why do you blog?
8. If you could visit one place right now – where would you go?
9. If you could give one piece of life advice to other travellers, what would you say?
10. What was your ultimate highlight of 2014?
11. Who is your favourite blogger right now?
